The Falcon Medieval Sword

June 28th, 2011 by TheBladesmith

Introducing a Limited Edition Medieval Sword, The Falcon.

The Falcon is not based upon any specific design but is instead a combination of design elements that could have been found in the fifteenth century. The blade is 34.75 inches long, 2 inches wide at the guard and 0.24 inches thick at the guard. The overall length is 44.5 inches and the weight without scabbard is 3 pounds and 7 ounces.

The fuller runs approximately one third of the length of the flattened diamond blade which tapers to a fine stabbing point. The center of percussion is at 21.75 inches from the guard. The secondary node of percussion is about 0.5 inches above the guard on the grip. The sword balances right at 4 inches from the guard. It has an agile though powerful feel with a superb combination of cutting and thrusting ability.

The blade is hand forged 5160 steel marquenched to an edge hardness of about 52-54 HRC and drawn back to a 47-48 on the spine and the tang/shoulders are drawn back to the mid 30′s. The guard and pommel are handmade from 1020 mild steel. The guard is 8 inches wide and the pommel is 2 inches in diameter and 15/16 inches thick. The grip is an ash core in a modified hock-bottle profile with four studs on either side and wrapped in supple black leather with a stitched seam. The grip is 7 inches long.  The tang is threaded and peened for extra security.

The Falcon could be classified as an Oakeshott Type XVIIIa with its fullered and tapered blade with a moderate length grip. While on the heavy side for a sword of this type, it is certainly not over-weight. The point of balance gives it a lively feel and makes this blade a tremendous cutter in this style.

I am offering the Falcon only as a limited edition of 5 swords. They will be individually numbered and will be sold on a first-come first-serve basis. Once five have been sold I will never offer this specific design ever again. A wooden cored black leather wrapped scabbard is included with the sword. Each scabbard will be numbered to correspond with the sword. The scabbard will have a German silver locke and chape, mounting rings, and belt with an appropriate medieval buckle.

The Falcon is shipped sharp with no secondary bevel and a fine satin polish on all of the steel.  Each Falcon will be made as the order is received. The wait time on this piece will be 20-24 weeks from time of order. The price for the Falcon, scabbard, and belt is $1150.00 plus shipping. I do ship worldwide.

I am accepting 50% down payments on the Falcon from June 30th until the five are sold. The balance will be due before shipping. Email me for details on reserving your Falcon today before they disappear.
